Finding dog friendly pickleball courts in San Diego is easier than you think — several parks and rec centers around the city let you bring your pup right along for the game. Louie, my Mini Goldendoodle, has been my co-pilot on most of these visits, and I only included spots I could personally verify as real, accessible, and worth your time.

Quick note: San Diego city parks allow leashed dogs in most areas. Always keep your dog on a leash (max 8 feet) unless you’re inside a designated off-leash zone. Check the City of San Diego’s dog park page for the full rules before you go.

# 1. Waterfront Park — Downtown San Diego

Waterfront Park is the best combo spot in the city. It has two pickleball courts and a fully fenced off-leash dog zone right next to each other — same park, same visit. Courts are first-come, first-served and free. The off-leash area has a dog-specific drinking fountain, agility equipment, and shaded seating nearby.

Address: 1600 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101

Courts: 2 outdoor pickleball courts

Dog situation: Off-leash dog zone directly adjacent

Cost: Free

Pro tip: Go on a weekday morning to beat the crowds. Weekends fill up fast.

# 2. Nobel Recreation Center — University City

Nobel Rec is a 31-acre facility with both indoor and outdoor pickleball courts plus an off-leash dog park on the same property. It’s one of the few spots in San Diego where you can literally walk from the dog park to the pickleball court. The facility is well-maintained, and the staff is friendly to beginners.

Address: 8810 Judicial Dr, San Diego, CA 92122 Courts: 3 indoor + 2 outdoor Dog situation: On-site off-leash dog park Cost: Free open play (hours vary)

Pro tip: Call ahead to confirm open play hours — they fluctuate based on gym usage.

# 3. Colina Del Sol Park — City Heights

Colina Del Sol has eight pickleball courts (lined on tennis courts) plus a dedicated off-leash dog park on-site. One catch: there are no permanent nets, so bring your own. If you have a portable net, this is a solid, low-key spot with good parking and a chill vibe.

Courts: 8 (lined on tennis courts, no nets provided)

Dog situation: Off-leash dog park on-site

Cost: Free

Pro tip: Bring a portable net. Without one, you can’t play.

# 4. Ocean Beach Recreation Center — Ocean Beach

OB Rec is a neighborhood gem. Free open play pickleball runs Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and the surrounding Ocean Beach area is one of the most dog-friendly neighborhoods in San Diego. Dogs are welcome on leash throughout the park.

Address: 4726 Santa Monica Ave, San Diego, CA 92107

Courts: Indoor

Dog situation: Leashed dogs are welcome in the surrounding park

Cost: Free open play

Pro tip: Ocean Beach has a famous off-leash dog beach nearby — combine pickleball with a beach run for Louie.

# 5. Balboa Park Activity Center — Balboa Park

Balboa Park Activity Center has five indoor courts with permanent lines and portable nets. Open play is free on select weekday mornings. Balboa Park itself is massive and dog-friendly — Nate’s Point and Morley Field both have designated off-leash areas within walking distance of the Activity Center.

Address: 2145 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101

Courts: 5 indoor

Dog situation: Multiple off-leash areas in Balboa Park nearby

Cost: Free drop-in play (check schedule — closed summers and school breaks)

Pro tip: Combine with a walk through Balboa Park after your session. Louie loses his mind there.

# Tips for Bringing Your Dog to Pickleball

  • Always bring water and a collapsible bowl — courts get hot
  • Keep Louie on a 6-foot leash near active courts
  • Check the surface — asphalt gets very hot in summer, especially midday
  • Let your dog get used to the sound of balls popping before you start playing
  • Have a shaded spot set up before you begin your game

# Final Thoughts

San Diego makes it genuinely easy to be a pickleball-playing dog parent. The key is knowing which parks combine courts with dog-friendly space nearby — and now you do. Whether you’re a beginner or you’ve been playing for years, these five spots are worth adding to your rotation.
