The Ho Chi Minh Trail is a one-of-a-kind trek from La Jolla’s northern areas to Blacks Beach that cuts through the forest and passes by cactus gardens.
The route begins at a tiny alleyway between homes in the La Jolla neighborhood, with warning signs in front of it. The trail by the left opens up to a perilous canyon below as soon as you pass the iron fences that fence the properties. Up here there is a vantage point overlooking the breathtaking sea below.
On the other side of the creek, you may see a pre-used trail leading up the slope to your left. However, that is not where you will be going.
You’ll take the steep, rutted route down the canyon. The path then meanders through thick vegetation before turning away. When you reach the bottom of the canyon, go to your left to follow the Ho Chi Minh Trail toward the sea.
You’ll come to a 2×4-board bridge after a while. This makeshift bridge spans a tiny spring. In the center, the board becomes somewhat springy, but it’s not difficult to traverse across.
The canyon got narrower when crossing the board. The path goes through thick vegetation once again and then follows a ledge along a tiny slot canyon below, which is said to have water after some excellent rain.
The photogenic part of the hike is when you get to the sandstone slot that the trail goes through. It’s possible to get stuck in the sandstone slot before you reach it. It’s also quite slippery on the way down.
Wearing sturdy shoes is advised while hiking this path during wet conditions to make it safer.
Once you reach the beach, you’ll have plenty of room. On the south, towards La Jolla Shores, you’ll get a gorgeous view of Scripps Pier and the Scripps Oceanographic Institute.
If you walk toward the north, you may visit Black’s Beach’s clothing-optional section. You may return using the Ho Chi Minh Trail in the same manner that you came.
