While the most expensive resorts typically cost more than $100 per night, our cheapest lodgings frequently top that amount.  This can result in visitors being shocked by the prices even with national brands known for low pricing.

How to choose the right San Diego Hotels

San Diego is as relaxed and picturesque as it is huge and active.  The city is large and bustling, with a wide range of San Diego hotels to select from in just about every sector, ranging from ultra-luxurious to cost-effective.

Because of its sheer size, where to stay in San Diego may be difficult, and there are generally some trade-offs.  These are the questions you should ask yourself to narrow down your options.

Is it critical to have access to the beach?  Do you require direct beachfront access? Is it acceptable to walk or travel by car? This is generally the #1 reason for selecting a hotel, and I’ll go through this in more detail later.

Do you have to be in a certain location?  If you’re staying with friends or attending a conference at the Convention Center, this will help you decide where to stay in San Diego.  I’ve compiled several neighborhood-focused lists that can be found below.

Do you want to party?  (If yes, Pacific Beach hotels, Little Italy hotels, or Downtown San Diego hotels are the best options.)

What type of vacation is this?  Is it a romantic getaway, a staycation, a multigenerational trip, or an activity-filled excursion?  This may have an impact on the sort of facilities you’ll require (or lack).  They’ll also need to consider if you’re traveling with children or animals.

Do you prefer small boutique hotels, global chain hotels, massive resorts, or extended stay homes?

What is your financial situation?  Are you a luxury traveler, a budget traveler, or somewhere in between?

Hotel Versus Hostel

A hotel or a hostel are the most popular options. The lesser of the two is to stay in a hostel. Hostels generally include Internet access, a laundry room, a phone, lockers for storing your belongings, and breakfast service. Hostels and hotels are similar in that they provide dormitory-style housing while hotels offer a more privacy than a hostel.

There’s a greater sense of community in a hostel, however there’s also more companionship than in a hotel room. If you enjoy meeting new people, a hostel would be ideal since you’d be able to meet all kinds of fascinating individuals.

Hostels are generally safe places to stay as long as you keep your valuables in a locker and remain vigilant. They are also a great way to live while on a budget or wanting to meet individuals of all different nationalities and backgrounds.

Although, if you just want to get away from it all for a while and enjoy some peace and quiet, then a hotel would be a better choice. Another method to save money is to stay outside of the city since inner city apartments are far more costly than those in neighboring areas.

The best time to book San Diego Hotels

Although we don’t have a true winter, because of our lovely climate, we are grateful to enjoy year-round beauty.  There’s really no off-season, so occupancy rates in the finest hotels in San Diego are usually high.

My general advice is to reserve your hotel as soon as possible.  If you’ve already booked your trip, make sure the rate is cancelable.  You may have the rate changed by the hotel (I do this for my clients all of the time) or cancel and rebook if rates drop.

Because hotel rates in San Diego usually climb closer to the date, especially during peak season, early booking is essential.  In September after Labor Day, as well as early November before Thanksgiving and early December before Christmas, things tend to take a breather.  Early January after winter break through the week before President’s Day weekend.
